Picking up for a comment Stan made in an earlier thread I recalled my sets which I built successfully in the early 50's.
The biggest problem was receiving the signal but thanks to an investment in about 50 yards of specialist aerial wire hooked up from my bedroom window to a flagpole on house on the corner of Holly St/Birch St, about 40 yrds away....bingo.
Not forgetting the ex WW2 headphones liberated from my Uncle Joe's shed in Campbell Park Rd!
