What a coincidence. A couple of days ago I was sorting some old books and the photo (below) fell out. You can see that it is parked on Ellison Street right down the bottom and would be parked just the other side of those three bushes in the Header photo. Of all the new cars I ever bought, this is the only one I never wanted which cries out for the story behind such a claim. |
In 1963 I was posted to RAF Muharraq (Barhrain) for a years unaccompanied tour. I had to get rid of my Mini Cooper S in a bit of a hurry and ended up by leaving it with the garage on Victoria Road (on the left just before crossing the lines into Jarrow). The guy there said he would sell it for me and keep the money as a deposit on a car when I returned in a years time. My dream at the time was to have an MG1100 so I wrote to him a number of times to ensure that he would have one for me when I got home. Well, how na´ve could I be? Yes, you've guessed it, their was no MG1100 sitting there waiting for me. His excuse was that he was a Vauxhall dealer, not an MG dealer. So, I ended up with what you see...the then new model Viva.
I was based at RAF Leconfield when I came home and we lived in quarters a few miles from there on the old Thor missile site at RAF Driffield. That flaming car let me down almost every day by failing to start. Poor Margaret was on standby every morning for push starts. I finally swapped it for a Ford Corsair...but that's another story.
