Hello Joyce, |
Lyon Lane was the communal back lane of Lyon Street and William Street.
Usually, terraced houses had an upstairs and a downstairs. The upstairs addresses were entered via their back lane, and the downstairs addresses were entered via the main street.
A tenant downstairs would have an address of 5, Prince Consort Road…
The tenant upstairs would have an address of 5, Back Prince Consort Road.
It seems that the Lyon Lane address was given to properties at the back of William Street that were entered via the back lane.
Often, the rooms of a single property were shared by several families, and the higgled-piggledy door numbers reflected that, as there’d be a door number for each family – some with a half added and some numbers repeating. I think the postie might have had a headache!
There were 3 dwellings with the address, 96, Lyon Lane: one was at the back of 98, William Street, one was at the back of
8, Tyne Street and one was at the back of 10, Tyne Street.
