The Cromwell came from Cromwell Road, the back lane of which backed onto The Cricketer. |
My grandparents lived at 31 Cromwell Road and my mother would nip over to the Cricketer with a jug to have filled up for my grandparents.
I had so many happy memories of The Cricketer playing with their young child. We would play in the backyard with all the crates. Beyond that was fields spreading for miles.
The family who lived next door to my grandparents was a faily called Burns. Mrs. Burns made delicious mince pies and would sell these at The Cricketer.
Leaving my grandparents at nighttime, it would be so dark and the sky was covered in stars which were so bright. Looking at the river you would see all the ships being worked on and the sparks from the welding.
My mother and I walked up the hill to catch the 18 bus to take us down to Hill Street in Jarrow.
