Some poor people committed suicide in Hebburn lakes, and may be the ones you've heard about Trish. |
The only ones I've heard of that died accidentally were the 1957 drownings and the reason the lakes were drained.
There were more drownings in Hebburn. Two children drowned in the Copperworks Reservoir about 1902 ish as it was just across the railway lines from the top of Glen St, and easy to get to for kids fishing there for Stickleback. A young lad from William St area near the Quay Board School called Colqhoun drowned in that same unfenced reservoir early 1950s. It was much deeper than the lakes with steep sloping sides.
