I cannot find the item that I had read which said that the NUM was ? Responsible? ( my words) For the closure of What I think was 80 pits. Was it that as some pits were not being worked on a daily basis they could not be reopened. Roof falls, flooding etc. we may never know. |
Reading more items on the subject it appears that the coal industry was becoming “out of date” as a means of producing power, it was just too expensive to sustain. The cost to the tax payer was becoming excessive.
I have been looking at the decline of the industries that build Hebburn. Reyrolle’s, Leslie’s, Palmers Hebburn as to why they declined. I know why the likes of Palmers (Vickers Armstrong Constructional Div,n.) as I worked there from 1958 to 1966 and other firms until 2003.
I may write about it sometime.
