Allan C, Davy, Mary - I wholeheartedly apologise if this has caused you distress or offence. Trish has very kindly given up her own time to help me with my research which is more than most, and has been of huge support. I totally understand that this is a very evocative subject but there are genuine and well-intentioned motives behind this. |
I know that there are some very well respected local historians amongst us but in their own words “what happens when we are gone?” So I think I am seen as the “next” generation to carry the torch and educate our youngsters on their heritage.
Today's society is very different from the one that we ourselves were raised in, and enthusing kids these days is hard! I have chosen this subject because it has always fascincated me and as such I DO think it will interest a lot of the kids of our town, in particular the ones who school now, where the old lakes used to be.
Trish has very kindy been the instegator of a memorial that is in the planning stages (although it has been approved and WILL happen) and we were both told that if we could find any living relative of any of these poor souls, then they would be more than welcome to attend whatever ceremony will take place, and very kindly that they are more than welcome to place their own plaque.
I have only this afternoon, spoken with one of the last living relatives, the mother of a young boy drowned in 1970 and I can assure you that she is anything but offended by this project. Indeed, one of her fears is that once she is gone, her son will be forgotten. I have assured this lovely, lovely lady that thanks to this project......... this will never happen. We are to meet soon and she is happy to give us photos of her son to be included in the article.
I am painfully aware (having lost several children in my immediate family) of the grieving process, and I know what a comfort it can be to have them remembered.
The purpose of my post last night was to try and ensure that Trish and myself don't miss anyone out. This has also been posted elsewhere on social media and indeed the Shields Gazette are to run an article hopefully next week to try and trace any victims whose families would like them to be included.
This message board is a gold mine of information and I am trying to record for posterity, as many of your memories as possible
Allan C, Davy, Mary - I hope I have put your minds at ease that there has been NO offence caused to the relatives and by all means, if any of you would like to be involved in helping (as Trish has), then I would be more than greatful. Kindest regards, Vikki xx
