It was in the 50s that I helped Lawson's at East Farm, Monkton when the thrasher was brought into the stack yard and the sheaves of corn were taken from stacks. When we got near the bottom, everybody stood ready with pitch forks to kill the rats that had been nesting in the stacks. The straw was piled up in a disused gin gang to be used as bedding for the cattle and no doubt a new nesting site for rats we missed.|
