Brian, the reporter has it wrong because a groat was a coin worth 4d and was issued between 1279 and 1662, the former being minted to Easterling standards now known as Sterling. Groats (with an s) is hullled grain of wheat, barley or oats. That S on the end of groat makes the difference..|
