The present law courts were built because Moot Hall next to the castle had no cells. After the windows were blown out by the blast of the Gateshead fire in 1854, they could only get the poor quality glass to match from Russia ...The blast was so strong, it blew the door off the castle. John Dobson lost his son Alexander in the fire which destroyed 9 streets as well..
Newcastle had a fire mark which was a small plaque fixed to the entrance of buildings. If it didn't have one and fire broke out and it didn't pose a threat to other buildings, the fire brigade let it burn! I believe it was a type of insurance. Great history of a city that has survived fire, floods, cholera and black death...
excellent as always, I knew about the Moot Hall being without cells but not about the extent of the damage of the fire. I had been told about the fire Mark's it would be good to find out if any were still in existence
There are records as to who lost their lives probably held by the corporation. Alexander Dobson could only be identified by a signet ring given to him by his father John Dobson. There were many spectators lost due to flying burning debris
