During WW2 my wife was a member of the Girls Training Corps. This is her story.
As a school leaver too young to join the womens services we girls enrolled in the Girls Training Corps.
We met week by week in our school playground where we mostly were drilled by a burley army sargeant who was quite fierce and shouted a lot. We were quite proficient and could about turn and march quite smartly. Our purpose was to be able to carry messages by bicycle and generally be useful in the event of an invasion.
This was our parade song:
1 We're hear to help our country
Shoulder her heavy load
This is the way to victory
This is the surest road.
We are cadets of the GTC
Our youth to our country we bring
Willing and ready we'll always be
To serve our God and our King.
2 Firm and united we shall stand
Whatever may come our way
Striving to help our native land
Soon may she win the day.
We are cadets etc. etc.
3 So let us ever joyful sing
While freely giving our youth
Back to the world we'll help to bring
Happiness, Peace and Truth.
Come follow, follow, follow us and join
Whither shall I follow, follow, follow,
Whither shall I follow, follow ye?
Come aand join us, we are marching
On the road to Victory.
