In response to the search for the mystery house question posed by Ken Wood (April 22nd), I emailed Lydia who has a wide knowledge of Felling area. Unfortunately she was unable to help in this instance. |
Lydia suffers from severe arthritic problems and has relied upon others to type her emails. This is why she has been unable to send her traditional Christmas greetings to us. As you will read, things have become even more difficult for her. However, She has made a tremendous effort to make contact with her friends on this board and has asked me to publish her latest email which she has typed herself as she is in isolation.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE MESSAGE FROM LYDIA
Oddly enough George, I had been thinking of you all week because I was reading soft backed book about Newcastle "Newcastle in Focus" by the Newcastle Chronicle. It has 242 photos in it. Some of them full page. I thought about you when I was reading it and thought you might like to have it. Its 8 x 11 inches and quite heavy.. I have a number of other books, same size.""Heworth" by J.M. Hewitt and "Felling" by Anthea Lang.. I looked through the Felling book which has lots of pictures around Felling in it but could not recognise the picture you sent.
Here the situation is really bad re the virus. There are 1400 apartments in this development and none of us are allowed out of our apartments not even to walk in the corridors for the last 3 weeks.
We've been isolated for the past 3 weeks and it will be continuing until further notice. Everything is closed here, schools, churches, banks, malls, food stores. restaurants. The restaurants have begun take out services and delivery but they are not allowed to come to the apartments. They are stopped at the front gate and tested then the orders are brought by concierges to the apartment. The dining rooms are closed and 3 days food is delivered to us at one time. Don't know how long this will last but it doesn't look good. Yesterday 2,000 people died in the US in 24 hours and 779 people died in 24 hours in New York. Last night in New Jersey the numbers were 95,000 infected and 5063 dead. In the last 24 hours 422 died. It's really scary. Even the doctor's offices are closed and they're treating people over the phone and computer services. Millions of people out of work because of everything closing down.
In the country to date 747,806 infected and 393,425 dead.
I hope its not as bad in the UK but I have a God daughter in Scotland who was to be married in may. They've had to cancel. Her mother is a
minister in Scotland and has performed 11 funerals this week. . On top of that the fiance's grandfather died from the virus last week.
Sorry that this is a bit of a downer but being in solitary confinement for a couple of weeks is depressing. Fortunately I can look out onto the carpark and see deliveries being made. The workers here (who we don't see) .are going about their work with masks on and everyone has to stay 6 feet apart from one another. Fourteen of them have the virus and four of the residents here. They are trying very hard to keep us safe..
Take care and be safe. If they ever let us out I will get to the Post Office and mail the Newcastle book. It's very interesting.
Love to everyone, Lydia. XX
