Yes you are correct Mac, the Continuing Care Scheme seems to Ďkick iní when the person requiring care goes into the Palliative Care system, people who are self funding, I believe are then entitled to it. I only came across this Scheme when my late mother was put on the Palliative Care System, I did receive correspondence and was given a dedicated person to handle my motherís situation, my mother was put under Palliative Care from 17th March but passed away on the 30th March, I had no idea that I could have applied for assistance earlier or insisted that my mother received palliative care earlier, I believe you are entitled to palliative care during the last year of your life, but I could be wrong. |
I spoke to the person who was dealing with my mother and she explained to me that as from 17th March I no longer had to pay for my motherís care as the responsibility had been taken over by the Council, I explained that I didnít want my mother put into Residential Care or a Hospice as I had made a promise that my mother would, as per her request, be allowed to pass away in her own home, I was offered Marie Curie assistance but was told it would not be every day due to high demand, I declined as by the time my conversation took place I had been made aware that my mother only had days to live.
The Continuing Care Scheme is not something that is well known, this Scheme was only brought to my attention by a District Nurse who said she would, as required, make the referral. To be honest, in my opinion, self funding people are not given information about assistance they can receive unless you come across someone who makes it their business to let you know or you spend time searching for information, we all pay our taxes and I think regardless of your personal circumstances you should be given a package, at the appropriate time, that contains information about what you are entitled to when the need arises it is then up to you whether or not you take what is offered.
