In Researching my Blacklock side of my Jackson Family

I found an odd thing a George Dixon married an Eleanor or Ellen Lazonby in 1867. |
In 1870,71 & 72 they had 3 children born in Herne a mining town between Essen and Dortmund in Germany.
They were back in England for the birth of 4th child in 1874 then 2 others.
George was an engine driver in 1891 C but in 1881 C and 1901 C he was an Engine Man Colliery Winding, so a skilled man.
That the time of the 1870 and 1871 they lived in Prussia and in 1871 it became the German Empire.
1870 was about the time of the Franco-Prussian war.
So the family lived through that before returning to England.
The last child born in Herne, Ellen - married into my Blacklock family, in 1898 a James Blacklock b. Windy Nook.
Some years age I had a photo taken in Felling of a large family which I now thinks was of the Blacklock's.
The trouble is I think I dumped the photo as I did not know about this side of the family. Hopefully I may have scanned it years ago and the scan is in an old file on the PC. Maybe the original will turn up fingers crossed. I can picture the head of the household, white hair and a sort of goatee beard.
Its interesting that people from the NE went to Prussia back then, why did that come about?
