This photo not only shows Heworth School but also Heworth post office. My great grandmother was the post mistress when this photograph was taken. The rest of the building was a lodging house she ran. The 1911 census and other records show she, my great grandfather and some of their children were in residence at that time. One of her children, my great aunt Lucy, opened a drapers shop in Pelaw which continued until at least the 1960s (no doubt run by her offspring). Just off the photograph, to the right, stood the rectory. The ruins of this building were used by Felling Council to store winter road salt right up to the late 1950s. |
My father had graphically described to me from his memory what you show in your picture today.
