I would dare to suggest that the picture is older. Penny Farthings (or ordinarys as they were called) were largely superseded in the 1880ís by the so-called safety bicycle, which had geometry similar to modern bikes. Also, the Jarrow Cycling club used to stage races in that park around the cricket pitch, which at that time covered the area of the present day football pitch plus the site of South View and North View. In 1890 the Cycling Club got into a dispute with the Cricket Club and decided to find alternative premises. They leased a site at Monkton which is still a sports ground - Monkton Stadium. |
Of course the gentleman in the picture might have been a fan of vintage bikes!
