A few years ago whilst on holiday in Portugal, Dorothy and went walking in the Ferrobo area. We stopped at a lovely little tea shop and were enjoying the afternoon when two other couples joined us. Turned out all three couples were strangers to each other. One couple was German and the other French. We were all of a similar age and eventually, would you believe it, the subject of the war came up. The German chap was very friendly and honest. He said the world, including his own country, owed a great debt to the English. To which the French chap became very angry and said the English did not win the war, which was quite true of course. Dorothy was anxious to leave and as we did so, the German chap laughed and said to me. "You know, they will never forgive you for not losing." |
