Hebburn House: Occupier: John Smailes: Colliery Manager. It later became the town Fire Station, which transferred to the new building up near the Hebburn Technical College, in 1965. There was a huge hill behind this property - about the height of a house - with allotments, goats and chickens, etc., which was known by locals as ‘The Fireman’s Hill’. |
Alex Baker: “The allotment owner was Jim Gardener. Then there was Mr George Simpson (Sons George & Alan); Mr Henley (Son Gerard); Old Joe McLeod; succeeded by my Old Friend Jim McLeod. A Chap named Taylor; the Lobb brothers: Herby & Norman, and one or two other allotments.
Before Ralph St was built after the War we used to fly our Kites off that hill. Most we made ourselves but I was lucky to have a Rescue Box Kite which used equipment during the War. I can't remember us ever getting our kites tangled, so we must have been quite good at it.”
The property was later used as a mechanic’s work-place.
