Bit cutting when out on my road bike today

Had to get the bike out today, withdrawl symptoms as not been out since the 20th.

As the forecast is bad for the next week, I pushed to go out on the bike. Just didn’t feel like going but DID.

It’s about 7 miles to Ripley Castle from our place by the south side of the river Nidd but 5 back along the north side.

Put on an extra layer (4 in total) and thought that I would have to take off the outer one in I got too hot.

Very surprised that even on getting home I was only warm.

Ripley Car Park had about 50 cars plus others spread around as the centre of car park grass soggy so you get bogged down.

The only pub, the Boars Head looked busy as was another on the way back.

A lot of people walking on the bridal path that goes west from the Castle. People just not aware of cyclists even though I was wearing bright Yellow jacket and flashing lights. Oncomers not so bad except one lady who did see me suddenly changed her mind and just jumped from one side of the track to the other, I just stopped in time.

If coming up behind people you have to be very very careful as in a lot of cases Brain not engaged. To give them some benefit I only saw one other cyclist on my ride.

When 50 yards from home a couple came out of a side road and turned to go the same way as I was going. They just about blocked the road and I was only 5 yards away. A calm Hello alerted them. Just as well It was not a car, but me.

There are a few Tesla cars that go along our road and they would not have heard one of those unless they make a lot of road noise but at 30 mph maybe not a lot.

When home I was surprised to see that I had done 11.5 miles the same as my normal route. However it took 85 min instead of 70. The main difference is my normal route had a very long straight of 4 miles which can be ridden fast. And no people in the way!

In passing the bridal path had lots of dogs not on a lead, you just know that they are going to turn across your path or xyz.

Still a very good ride not pushing hard just cruising most of the time ( not really able to push knackered).

Have to keep an eye on the weather to see when I may be able to go out again. Some snow would be nice if it’s the right type. Love a snow ride if fresh. MTB to the fore.

Final note I’ve been bought a pair of Boots for using when I am logging bright orange/red wellies reinforced for chainsaw use.

i just use normal boots allan, but steel cappers when the son,s are cutting railway sleepers up, usually i just spectate now,the sleepers burn very well in the back garden stove,they are creosoted,but cannot burm them in the house stove, for the smell, and fumes, i think we are logging on monday.

Alan I have been using Rigger boots for about 6 years but they now leak and cannot find the Hole. In any case they were becoming a bit slack and hurting my toes.

Never looked back then for logging boots if they made them, never thought of it.

Anyway I decided to try to take extra care, just in case and ordered them for Xmas. My daughter is going to pay for them.
My logging is for them, we don’t have a wood burner.

I log on my own once or twice a week during winter and have about 3 trees to fell and cut up.
These bots are also wellies so I can go acros# our beck to access other stuff

I did have a proper pair of trousers for logging but they were far too hot when wearing, not Been able to find logging chaps so wear two pairs of trousers.

It's so good that you were able to get out on your bike today, before the weather changes.
The fact that you were only warm after 7 miles cycling, shows that your stamina is improving.

Sorry Barry it was easy for first 7 miles then the hill start.

I’ve now got a logging system on my phone which tracks all movement thanks to my granddaughter using GPS.

It gives max speed, average speed, height climbed etc. It even plots it out for you.

Going I did not generate a lot of heat and coming back the wind hard risen keeping me cool plus I was not pushing.

Through this app I can track the granddaughter and her dad as they do their daily run, she tracks me when I’m on the bike.

You could use it for walking or driving.

Just got to learn to use it properly.

A lot of cyclists use it say for A to B etc or a route, and it’s very very competitive. It’s Strava and it’s free up,to a point.

ive just completed 4001 miles this year .my phone records everything
that 4001 miles is the equivalent of
2,042,675 steps
308,000 cals about 1,027 chicken legs
170.8 marathons
i try to go out 4 times a week if i dont my wife keeps finding paint brushes

Ye, I do a lot of miles on my bike swim nearly every day but can I looser my belly, can I hell.

my painting of doors etc finished around fifty years ago when i did two doors in the house,there was runs everywhere, i never got asked to paint anything in the house again.

That is a lot. You must have been cycling for years at a high level to be able to do that.

I have only had my road bike for 3 years now and enjoy it, but it’s a completely different discipline to mountain biking.

I would love to be able to go out and ride say 50 miles but to do that I would have to live in the Vale of York.

I’m on the bottom edge of the Yorkshire Dales and everywhere is up. My favourite ride is from the Western outskirts of Harrogate out to the West and up,the Blubberhouses to Greenhow Road. Drop down into Pateley Bridge and back through Ripley.

Another is just the 2 climbs up,to Brimham Rocks and back via cafe stops. I just love being up on the tops.

If I could just be able to get to Reeth, the climb up to the Tan Hill pub (road Bike) or ride the area around Surrender Bridge on MTB. Bliss.

If I can get fit enough I will join our local cycling club. Been out with them twice in 2019 and found that my MTB was too slow to keep up on the flat. The road bike OK but it’s too high geared for me, put a MTB cassette on the back but need smaller chain rings 50 & 34 too high.

I may go to an electric road bike though, as old injuries etc. Will not allow me to get to a fitness level that I think I require. Also at 78 that puts another limit on me.

I was knocked of my bike three years ago and damaged my hip .I cant ride an ordinary road bike to painful . I have an ebike now still painful but use painkillers .ebikes are amazing you still have to peddle them give you about 25 % assist from normal road bike .Try one im 74

Hi Ray. I had a replacement hip joint in 2017 and it’s fine as long as I don’t do stupid things like falling off an embankment onto a road Yes I did but no damage as far as I know.

However during the opn they move muscles out of the way etc. Reattach tendons. I do have problems with that hip but nowt that I cannot cope with.

I will buy an electric bike once this virus thing is no longer a danger to me and mine.

I favour a road bike with the motor in the rear hub Oreba Gain or a Boardman the motor being in the bottom bracket.

I would love a eMtb but the price Wow, but they are too heavy to lift onto my cycle rack which I use when towing the Caravan.

I did have a Thule rack that fitted onto the tow ball but sold it 2 years ago. I could do with it now.

You win some and loose some ! In this case £.

My bike is a haibike hardseven one .fantastic bike but very heavy done over 14000 miles on her .There about £1700 but worth it there are mutch lighter ones out now
