This is a strange one Alan. I also thought it was the garage you mean. However, that garage was next to the very large church which has been there since the middle ages and is still present. The church is not shown on the photo.

There are three good clues on the photo which pin-pont where the garage was. Two of these you will know about the other is perhaps before your time.

the wallpaper shop,maybe, the only wallpaper shop i knew was next to the blue bell.

I did a bit detective work and here is the tall building today. Where the Garage was is waste land on the Google view.

Hard to believe but just to the right of the Odeon and directly where the posh Vouge shop was.

Attached to the left side of the Odeon was a shop called Eades (Not sure of the spelling) They sold musical instruments and records. I remember a similar shop in Jarrow and I have 78s with their name on the carboard covers.
The other clues to the where the garage stood are:-
1; The William IV pub.
2; The Indoor amusement arcade
3; The slope of the lane next to the garage
4; The ornate windows next to the garage.
The photograph came from a collection which has many mistaken identities. For instance the Palace Cinema on Sunderland Road is identified as the Imperia which is subject to another post on this board. All in all this chap and his wife had done the work very well and I feel it would be bad form to correct him. He admitted he wasn't a local but had been given the job by Gateshead libraries.

You always have to point out mistakes or it will confuse people in the future.He was getting paid and was wrong.
Someone wrote a book on Hebburn and stated Hebburn Lakes were worked out old sandstone Quarries.Because this rubbish is in a book it makes it difficult to correct it but I've tried getting word out that it is duff info.
The lakes were created by placing embankments around the pasture land which acted the same as dams do. Then the little burn that came down from Wardley area filled them up. The bed of the lake was the former pasture land.

an interesting old pic of mine, norman and george are exactly right,this building shows the imprint of the old garage wall and the shape of the garage..

The building with the garage outline was my first clue. For decades it had been an amusement arcade, (see old photo). Then part of it became Haugh's Radio shop after they had vacated their Sunderland Road premises near the tram sheds. This was much later in the 1950s. Then Haugh's closed and the building became a bigger arcade before finally being demolished along with everything else the council could lay their hands on.
