Interesting most of the bikes have bells, one appears to have a horn ( the ones that had a rubber bulb)’.
Quite a few toe clips, the shape of some of the handlebars see the lad behind the bike with drink bottle on handlebar.

Name I’ve not seen before Alice Van Baelen, sounds a Dutch name.

That’s a fair trek to Wolsingham from Hebburn nearly 30 miles each way. A fit lot.

I wonder what gearing their bikes had.

Single chainring and single cog on the rear wheel. They could have had Derailleur gears on the back but they only came into use in 1937 so that is doubtful.

That make them fitter than I thought.

I was told years ago that they all had fixed wheel so even going down hill the pedals were still going.

I had wondered about that. Not being familiar with fixed wheel bikes back then. Looking at some of the bikes I could not see a front brake calliper but that may just be the angle.

I would never ride a bike without a front brake ever!

In my years in the Hebburn Vics 1950 to 1955 most riders couldn't afford bikes with derailleur gears
So they rode fixed wheel one caliper on the front was the law then. I still used it when I made a comeback in 1978 at Eighteen stone. Took me 4 months to get down to Eleven and a half stone won lots of Veterans medals for the over 40s. Good old fixed wheel.

Just reading that Hebburn North 557.7 and Hebburn South 477.1 have the highest rates in South Tyneside. Obviously lots of people being naughty boys and girls,
