194o's Mum

Sewing, darning, not idly sitting Cooking, mending, cleaning , knitting Dusting, sweeping, raking, cinders Busier than Polly Flinders Hugging, loving, tending, kissing Worrying when kids go missing Hand to mouth and day by day A paragon in every way
Siren wails and all awaken As windows rattle and houses shaken A sleepy, frightened, helter shelter Down the stairs, into the shelter Dank and dismal, dark and fearful Huddling, shivering, children tearful Engines throbbing in the sky Hopefully they'll pass on by Explosions thundering far away They survive to face another day So ends a night of stress and strain Then dawn arrives to start again

Very appropriate description of the mothers in six years of warJohnI.well remember those frightening times,as a kid. This awful virus has kept us inside our homes now but we have all our comforts unlike the dark days of wartime
