GEORDIE HUMOUR
Geordie was in the shop looking for a jacket to buy for his girlfriend as a present. He couldn't decide which one to get, so he asked the salesman, "If you were buying a jacket for your girlfriend, which one would you get?
He said, "A bulletproof one. I'm married."

Very sad news about John. The other sad thing is I never knew a single thing about him. Where he lived. His age nothing.. Bless.

A photo John gave me

I met John and got this pic off him but know nothing more other than he lived near St Oswald's Church. He said his dad was a goalkeeper and played for a few teams eg Pelaw AFC on this photo. Does anyone know anything about the Hospital Cup?

Norman There was the Palmers Hospital Cup and the Hebburn infirmary cup which by looking at other trophies seemed to be local area trophies within the Durham FA area, similar types of trophies were up for grabs in other parts of the Durham area. I wonder if they were off season trophies, before or after the main season commenced as other trophies were up for competition during the season.Far better than friendlies and with something to show for the teams efforts.

The cups were indeed minor competitions which were competed for by the reserve sides of the various clubs. Whether some of the clubs fielded very strong reserve teams as they progressed could have happened as it had happened elsewhere for similar trophies. What is surprising is the capacity of some of the local football grounds and attendances of those grounds where a few thousand spectators at a match wasn't uncommon.
As a footnote to this as a teenager I went out with a girl whose grandad played for Newcastle but got a chance to move to South Shields, I asked him why and he said quite simply more money. The football league had a salary cap,lower leagues didn't and those with decent attendances often paid a higher wage than football league teams.

So sorry to hear that, was it on the board? If so I must have missed it somehow. He was a really nice guy, I asked him to sell me a copy of his book but he would not take payment so I made a donation to his nephew instead. He will be a big miss as his was the first posting I looked for each day. RIP John.

Hi Mac Hardy,
We only discovered this sad news yesterday and once it was put on the board we had lots of condolences and we even added some of his jokes as a tribute to a lovely man. It was the way he told them aswell

When I played for Leslies Juniors. We won the Palmers hospital cup. The final was played at Simonside Hall. One of South Shields old grounds.

Hi Colin what age did Leslies juniors go up to, the Palmers Hospital cup was originally for reserve and second eleven teams but sometime trophies were reassigned and this seems to be the case making it a competition for clubs junior teams. Belated congratulations to you and the rest of the team on your success.
