Barry, I have a copy of this document and it's history yes fantastic. I've always liked the Lych gate there. Lych Gates came into being in Anglo Saxon times when monks had to travel to a church to conduct a service. The congregation could take shelter under it when the weather was bad. I know also that Lych is some Scandinavian origin relating to a corpse so the name may be linked to a funeral waiting for the monks to arrive..

Fascinating read Barry. So much history in such a small town. My father claimed that as a child he operated the bellows for the church organ whilst his own dad was busy digging graves. Any earning my grandfather made were immediately transferred into the coffers of The Swan which was just around the corner.

Me? No way George! I worked up a thirst watching everybody else digging a hole. The only digging I do these days is church history! - and I go to greater depths as Barry will confirm!!! Canny pint of scotch in those days!

My friend Tom DeVere took his visiting brother on a nostalgic tour of Felling. Feeling peckish, they visited the pubs in the area only to be very disappointed with the state of the food fare. Tom, feeling embarrassed, suggested a better class watering hole would be The Swan at Heworth. By now their peckishness had turned to outright hunger. Upon asking for the food menu, Tom was offered a packet of crisps and/or pork sctratchings.

Thank you Barry for those kind words. I know what I do isn't exciting to many but many times it helps other areas of local history. When I researched St Aloysius RC in Hebburn I was told that Charles Walker's drawing of his original design was lost. No one had ever seen it yet I discovered it hanging on a wall in the vestry! It had a bell tower that was never added to keep the cost down! It finally cost £5,000 by Jarrow builder Thomas Lumsden but that's another day!

Again Barry a big thank you! As it happens I wondered into to the vaults in York Minster because the doors were left open but nobody told me that it was not open to the public. However the good news is when my research has finished on St Paul's in Jarrow there will be big surprises which may alter history a lot. A lot of church history is guesswork and not fact but delving into the depths like I do produces fact. It may take a few years yet but I'll get there because already certain things have come to light which I can't say at the moment.

Barry, it's a full time job because if you think of a tree, the trunk is the subject and there are so many branches and roots which become side tracking, you tend to forget where you started! I Began studying some pews a few years ago and honestly ended up studying the production of shellac from India to Germany. I ended up in a total knot as I got deeper into turpentine medicinal qualities and timber technology of Northern Pitch Pine and Red Pine. You just have to know when to stop.

I think I have an incredible and fantastic life doing what I do because I meet so many people from all walks of life! I once met an old lady in st. Mary's Cathedral Newcastle. She prayed for her late husband and then lit a candle. As she passed me I smiled and said hello. I listened to her story which was very interesting and our chat gave her comfort. This is one side of ecclesiology I enjoy. Another time I was talking to a visitor in st. Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle about the organ as she wondered about its history. Within a few minutes we were joined by another 4 people! So the Saga went on from 1747 and Renatus Harris the organ builder, to the history of Charles Avison's life story, the organist and compose. Best day out yet!!! I couldn't imagine life any other way now Barry. I have often been referred to as Billy No Mates but I've probably made more friends than they have!

Well I've had no complaints so far? Only yours! I'm only one of Six alive today, so what's the problem with keeping history alive that English heritage can't keep up with ?

Thanks Liz.Most of us have a lot of knowledge that we love to share and as you say, people don't have to read it. I have never been offensive or called anyone but I ignore cowards who haven't the intellect to keep up and show their identity. Norman provides a site which creates history. However, I fail to see how anyone calls it bragging when others have asked me for lectures on ecclesiology. I speak in Earnest!

you're right Stan there is an enormous amount of knowledge on this site both from individuals and collectively. What is fun and I think a lot of us have had this happen is that a post will trigger something in your memory that can occasionally take a post in another direction and suddenly triggers another influx of posts. Keep posting occasionally one of us will send the post in another direction but it usually ends up with more of us involved.
