The response from my friend Ellen seems to think the window could have been manufactured by Reed Millican of Newcastle as they produced much of the stained glass for churches around that time. However, that firm produced all windows for st. Aloysius Church Hebburn in 1886 and 1887 ready to be installed for the opening in 1888. Having completed my research on st. Aloysius Church it may surprise you all to learn that there is over 10,450 single cuts of glass in the windows! Trust me George and Barry, I painstakingly worked it out 3 years ago!!!

It is almost ten years since I took up the search to find a stained glass window which looked even remotely like that which is housed in Hebburn. From South Shields to Hexham, Durham to Alnwick I looked at church windows. Having no luck I tried another tack and visited old council buildings which had stained glass windows. At North Shields council buildings I had no luck except it was suggested I try ship building records. At the discovery museum I met a former Jarrow Central School pupil Ron French (well known to this board) and we trawled through many wonderful books on ships with stained glass but did not find what I was looking for. Together, Ron and I went to Alnwick and visited the White Swan restaurant. Surrounded by the original panelling, mirrors, ceiling and stained glass salvaged from RMS Olympic (Titanic's sister ship) we enjoyed dinner but agreed the stained glass was nothing like that which had been in the hall of JCS. I then gave up a dedicated search but always hope to find what I am looking for. The window in the Hedley Hall Schoolroom is not as it was when first installed in 1901. Repairs performed by the pupils of Jarrow Grammar School included a small amount of modern glass edging from Elders & Walker of Gateshead. Some lead soldering was required and wire attachments to cross member supports were replaced. None of the repairs detract from the window. Instead, I feel a continuity was made by those involved in the recovery.

Couldn't agree more George! We need to preserve history and what better place. I have found many many times that I have had to dig at great depths because no one wrote it down or left some record. We ALL need to record even a little bit before we lose our history. It may be trivial now but it is future history. Norman Barry and George plus many more contribute to this website. No matter how trivial you think your part is, believe me it isn't. Norman has over 5000 photographs and still counting!. I could never have made my DVDs on churches without Norman's help so please keep the history going. It is more valuable than you think.
