Cut throat dene

When I was a young lad there was a dene behind the fire station going down to the Tyne. Called cut throat dene . Does anybody know the origin of the name . The dene ran from the railway line to the staithes.

Cuthroat Dean is said to be so named because of its once remote wildness, where travellers many years ago could be and most likely were waylaid and murdered there, for a poke of money, or even less. The beautiful Hainingwood, could be a most unsavoury place to be passing through in those harsh, deceptively, wonderful days of yore.

No, he's right. There's a little stone sign for Cleadon and then a big metal one for South Tyneside
You know, i think he might be. For some reason, unlike the Sunderland one, the South Tyneside one isn't really where it should be. The Sunderland one is right on its border to the south side of Cut Throat Dene. The South Tyneside one should be just to the north side of Cut Throat Dene, maybe they moved it back slightly for better visibility coming right out of the trees, whereas the Sunderland one is more clear anyway.
The Cleadon "stone" isn't really an official road sign which have more strict

There was also a Whinney Lane which led from Victoria Road down to the river, opposite Hartleyburn Avenue. My assumption is that the name was given from the horse whinney's as they struggled uphill with a cart full of cargo from the river. The names were very literal back then if that helps with Cutthroat Dene

Whinney Lane - it is likely that it was named after the Whin Dyke.

CHeers Barry! I thought that might be possible but then thought it would have been called Whin Lane? Whinney to me means horses? I'll look into it a bit more!

Hi Vikki,
I read that Whinny lane was given the name because there is an outcrop of whinstone in that part of Hebburn.
