Used to lie in bed on a night when i was a kid in the 60's and hear the Souter fog horn going off in Hebburn. Must have been one of the loneliest sounds in the world but i loved hearing it. Nowadays it takes me all my time to hear my alarm clock going off of a morning from three feet away.

Barry, John, the last time I was within touching distance of the Souter lighthouse was 29th March 1958. The weather was absolutely shocking. A thick fog, out at sea. A howling gale with horizontal sleet and hail. No, I wasn't in a boat, I was playing football for Felling Wanderers against Whitburn Colliery. The pitch was just to the side of the lighthouse which throughout the whole game blew its mighty foghorn. We were well and truly beaten, absolutely cream crackered and nearly deaf when the final whistle blew. As we left the pitch the whole team came and carried me shoulder high and cheered me to the changing rooms. Why? My namesake Mr What had just won the Grand National whilst we were playing at 18/1. We each won £18 - a fortune in those days.

I also remember being in Hebburn and hearing the mournful sound of the Souter foghorn all the way from Marsden.

George, you being carried shoulder-high and all your team cheering, after having lost the game, might have raised a few eyebrows and brought puzzled looks from the other team! Ha-ha! 🙂

With £18 each from your namesake winning the Grand National, I bet you all felt that you had a lottery win.
'Lottery' won the Grand National in 1839, so you're probably older than I thought, he-he!

Good stuff Barry. Yes, most of the team were still apprentices and winning £18 was a lot of money. For those who are puzzled, my name is George Watt. The winning horse was Mr What. Nearly 63 years ago and I can still hear that bl***y foghorn.
