When you came across the Station footbridge facingthe North Eastern Hotel, you dont see Christ Church straight ahead.

Looks like Sheldon stree Station St is next to the new Palmers Hospital.Clayton Street ran past the old Palmers Hospital the only bit of clayton street left is the cenotaph the entrance to the new palmers is in old clayton street.

Davy is right when he said its outside the North Eastern. Jimmy agrees with what I thought ie its Clayton St.

I always thought the approach to the footbridge was an extension of Station Street, as the bend in the vicinity of the War Memorial is slightly less acute than the bend from Clayton Street. I'm pretty sure that the Area Pools Office in the pic used to be O'Rourke's bookshop after they moved from North Street.

I checked the address of the North Eastern Hotel on the 1898 records and it was Clayton St.

Always better to be able to see both sides of anything, to get the full picture. This view looks like it’s taken from behind the barrier at the foot of the ‘station stairs’...and it can be dated fairly accurately as 1971/72...but how?

The "Ladbrrokes" in the pic was I recall the first legal betting shop in Jarrow following the 1961 Act. I am struggling to remember the main bookie in Jarrow who opened it. Help!
And the reason why Normans pic could have initially fooled those of us who used the Station Stairs in the 40'5 and 50's was that the Terrace on Clayton St opposite Palmers, which included Glen and Norman Woodhouse's Barbers and the Chiropodists, had been cleared at the time of the photo and opened up the view of Christ Church.
