I am a long way fron certain but probably where the Bus Station is now between Station St and Sheldon St with the latter in the backgound!
I do remember a piece of derelict land after the terraces were demolished and buses did park there
To the right of the pic is the doorway in the gable end. I think that became the site of the Elec Board Showrooms when the former house was demolished and the shop built.
One for the detective I think!!

don,t know but it is south shield,s registered , i heard a few years ago that a local optician had CU 2 on his car,bet that cost a few bob.

AS you say Alan CU was the reg district for South Shileds and many of our family cars in the 40's had that reg.
But your mention of Shields has got me thinking. There was also a piece of land towards the top of Mile End Road where the buses parked.
I remember that often when we were waiting for the bus at the stop further down we used to nip up to see what was parked up and likely to be "next".

That piece of land at the top of Mile End Rd became a Bus Station Mac.

That whole area at the Top End of Mile End road had Terraces running into it, which back in the late 40's were desperate slums and were among the first to go in the Mid Fifties

Interesting, I didn't know that CU was the old registration mark for South Shields. Presumably from Caer Urfa, the Roman name for the town?

well, i did,nt know that, gateshead was CN newcastle i think was VK and durham was PT.

Newcastle also had BB and TN.
FT was Tynemouth. WE had a Ford in about 1949
FT 4087. 70 odd years since and I still remember!!

i can never remember eny bus with 1D or a letter after the number could it be a works bus

I dont remember a 1D Ray but there were some with letters.I think that it was the 26A that went from Jarrow to Sunderland.
AS a child I was on it oncw a week and as I recall it went up York Ave, then along Hedworth Lane and onwards via BOldon.
I could have the number wrong though!!

Don't know about a 1D but there was a 1A that later became 58 (Jarrow to Shields via York Ave and Stanhope road in S. Shields.)

I travelled on the 1A many times when I was in Monkton Road infants school, circa 1955. I used to catch it in Monkton Terrace near Scotts Dairies, from where it went up the hill, over the railway bridge, turned right into Croft Terrace, and from there via Bedeburn Road to York Avenue. I used to get off at Belsfield and go to meet my Mum who was teaching at Bedeburn School. The 1A alternated with the 69 which I took on some occasions.

I don't remember the 1D, but I do recall the 26 which came up Albert Road and turned into Bedeburn Road at Carrick's corner. From there it went via York Avenue to Boldon Colliery, passing by the Greyhound pub, and then on to Park Lane in Sunderland.

In the fifties I used to pay my union subs at pub with the pub entry the doors showing in the back ground.I would be today opposite the taxi office at Jarrow railway station It would be sixty years ago Canot remember its name not a very good pint. Happy days. CHEERS. All

Trick one this!
I am not sure that those are the doors to the North Eastern which I think is the pub you were referring to.
If my initial stab at the location was correct the North Eastern would only be a 50 yards away opposite the Station Stairs but it wouldnt have been visible from where the buses are!

I remember the 26 that used to go down Mallems bank and on to the greyhound .I remember one winter when it skidded and got stuck on that tight bend
