Old Industries of Hebburn

Hi can anyone remember what industries were on Wagonway Road? I’ve just walked past today and remember seeing lots of buses parked up for workers but can’t recall what the factories were.

Hi Colin,
The buses used to line up outside Palmers. Further along and past Palmers was the Bede Metal Co.

Munk cranes, had a factory nearer, where the hut pub was, also vaux had a warehouse there.

Buses were mainly for palmers dock, and galvanising works.

I cannot understand the Pyro when B.I.C.C. took it over and built a new workshop with offices. I was sent in working on contract to redesign the floor layout of the upstairs workshop and the main cable making plant and some machinery. After I did that they closed the entire factory! That's puzzling as it looked as though it was about to expand. Why they wasted that money I will never know.

That's nothing to the place I used to work, Newcastle breweries. They knocked down the Hodgson arms pub, then all of Wellington street. Built a new bottling hall costing dont know how many millions, ran it for a couple of years and then pulled the whole place down all of it. there is not one brick left of the breweries. Another example of waste was they used to brew and bottle the brown ale at newcastle then send it down to Manchester to have it sent back to newcastle to distribute it back here.

davy,when i drove a pop waggon for towers at felling i had to come into the breweries, as far as i can remember the crates would come down inside concrete pillars, then be loaded onto wagons,you were allowed two bottles of brown ale, but you had to drink it on the premises,if you took it out you were sacked. crazy.

Worked in the kegging hall alan. And someone used to come around regular with a massive teapot to top your mug up with not tea but lager.

Sad really Davy. I went down to Marconi at Bill Quay a few months ago where I served my time. It was a nostalgic trip but sad to see the deralict state.
