TSB closure today.

As headline stated it shut today ,therefore no bank in Hebburn. At one time there were Lloyds, Barclays, Midland and TSB.
Another query was there ever a bank in Pelaw, I don't remember one.

The Banks in Hebburn were Lloyds (later Lloyds TSB , Martins (became Barclays in 1969) and Trustee Savings Bank (later TSB).
I do not recall a Midland or HSBC in Hebburn. There was never a Bank in Pelaw David.

There are no banks in Felling.The nearest banks are Gateshead, Washington galleries and Jarrow.

The Midland was the opposite corner from where Lloyds pharmacy is now, later there was a Barclays there as well.

I am presuming that you mean in the shopping precinct.
The Barclays in the precinct was the branch that moved from the corner at Prince Consort Rd.
I still cant recall the Midland.

It was a Midland branch before Barclays moved and opened up yrs later. I can't remember years and it may have been for a short time but I clearly remember it.

It is very odd David.
In the sixties I worked at Lloyds. Each of the banks in Hebburn regularly dealt with one another. For instance duplicate keys were held at Barclays in case of need and the TSB got its cash from Lloyds every morning before opening time.
But I have no recollection of interaction with Midland. Probably an age thing.
So to put my mind at rest I have approached an inside source at HSBC to whom I have asked the question "Did Midland ever have a branch in Hebburn and if so what was its unique sort-code"?

I have a vague recollection that in early years the Bank was the Midland before it was Martins I used to collect a few kids from the war nursery as their mothers worked in the shipyards during the war because of the shortage of menfolk being away fighting in the services..I passed by the Bank on Argyle street I was just a kid myself at that time.just one of my memories.

Thank you for your email.

I have had a search of our branch database and cannot find any records relating to a Midland Bank branch in Hebburn-on-Tyne. I did however find the listing of a branch across the river in Wallsend-on-Tyne, which was first opened in 1898 by the York City & County Bank. It became part of Midland Bank in 1909.

I have not quite let it rest. I have asked if there is any possibility that it may have been a sub office.In that case it would not have had its own sort code but would have used that of its parent office.

They were my thoughts too Mac,but I wouldn'i worry about it now.I know you are a stickler for correct info,but not worth giving yourself headaches over.
