Got a few memories Hebburn station the blazing fire in winter in the waiting room, early morning with Hughie Bennet to unload the milk run train to collect the morning papers. I remember when as kids our gang would play around the station and some times play chicken by crossing over the lines from one side to the other bearing in mind those days the line was electrified.i remember a lad called GED Tayl lor tripping on the line and fell inan instant a workman jumped in and threw his coat over GED and pulled him clear,he had got burnt hands,GED was badly burnt on the head his fingers were left crooked the workman was a local man lived in Dunston st his name was a mr Scammel.he did get an award for his actions.Another little story seeing Norman Dunns photo of the Newcastle platform takes me back some 60years ago 1961 when my dad and my eldest brother left when l got on the train on my jurney to Australia as a 10 pound Pom to catch the train to Waterloo in order to catch the boat train to Southampton where l set sail on the Canberra.,yes the photo takes me back many years ago. |
