I remember taking my son into this shop in the early 70s and it was like stepping back into the early 1900s.

When we were kids in the colliery in the 50/60s this was our "supermarket" when we got our pocket money or got an empty beer bottle to take back for the refund we went see Nellie and George for our sherbet dips,candy tabs,spangles,fizz bombs etc

They had a big Fry's cream bar mirror with the 5 boys on it. And original gas mantles! Great emporium?

Patricks was our nearest shop when we lived in Arthur St. I believe old Mr Patrick was related to the Headmaster of the Colliery Board School

Every time leauge of gentlemen's local shop for local people comes on it reminds me of Patrick's.

Yes David 200yds East along from Palmer main gate towards Jarrow

When did it get demolished ? I started Palmers 1975 and don't remember it lived near st Oswalds till 1965 aftervthet Monkton so maybe missed this?

My great-grandmother lived in the house on the lefthand side of the photo before it became part of the shop.

Mr. Patrick was quite an artist, his son David served his time as an Apprentice Electrician in Hawthorne Leslies.

Mac the shop owner who was the artist was George Bond (the late Mr Patricks son in law) Whos son Alan Bond was the apprentice electrician
