Has anyone applied for a paper copy of the census form using the telephone instruction on the leaflet and found that the 10 digit number has not been recognised?

My reference number only has ten digits and the instruction on the message received when you ring up asks you to type in using your keypad the 10 digit reference number on your letter. You only get three attempts at keying this number in and each time the message comes back with. Sorry this number has not been recognised.

I suspect that you are using the 10 digit reference number in the header.
THe one to use is the one in BOLD under the how to complete section.
But as an Internet user why ask for paper? It is easy online. Mine is done saved and ready for any last minute adjustments on the 21st

Yes I have completed our Census on line as well, some very silly questions but that is a reflection of the times in which we are living in.

Not seen it as it goes to my daughters. I know the letter arrived last week.

As I have not seen it I cannot really comment on its content, but any question will be relevant to some researcher.

The problem that could well arise today is “ what in these days of PC what can they ask of how to we ask a question on XYZ”.

The census is a legal requirement of Government and it’s questions are laid down. It’s the supplementary questions that are added to it. Those will never be seen by the public in 100 years time.

The first Census was just to try to find out how many people there were in the U.K. not until that of 1841 was the Census any use to research your family but it was of limited use as ages were rounded up or down and place of birth limited to birth in County, country of birth. Not a lot of use by itself, but if you had your family on the 1851 C that answered a lot of questions about the 1841 C.

The main problem with all the Census document available today 1841 to 1911 and the 1939 records are the people who entered the info. Handwriting can be a big problem and some enumerators differed from others in what they wrote.

The biggest problem was always language, a well spoken enumerator speaking to a broad Welsh or Scots or a Geordie often had difficulty in getting the names and occupations correct. A Haader On, down as a riveter. The worst is anything to do with the land. Agl.. Labourer covered a Hugh amount of jobs, I think it was an easy way out. However I have never seen the remit given to the enumerators to work from.

I agree with John Shearer some of the questions are daft.
If you are having trouble with entering household code remember you don’t have to put spaces in it does it for you, got through straight away.

The letter says you can request a paper copy at www.census.gov.uk or call 08001412021. When you ring that number a recorded voice gives you another number to ring 08008766276. When you ring this number a recorded voice distinctly says key in your 10 digit reference number located at the top right hand of your letter.

To be honest Liz I will probably use the internet but I have a number of friends who will need to apply for a hard copy and will need some advice. The telephone system does not work using either number.
