The oldest photo in my collection
Posted by Norman Dunn on March 14, 2021, 10:47:11
I was asked what was the oldest photo in my collection. Well it is a poor quality one from 1864 showing the Monkton Village Flower Show's Committee men, all in their top hats. The photo came to me from my sister's Reyrolles offices work colleague the late Irene Gargett nee Handyside who was brought up in Monkton.Maybe someone remembers Irene from Monkton or Reyrolles? As there are no names on the photo, here is a list of surnames that could be on the photo (maybe not them but their children as the list is from 1898)
Mr Handyside farmer at High Farm, Mr Dodds the Postmaster, Mr Summerbell the Butcher, Mr Kirkley the market gardener, Mr Robert of Grange Farm, Mr Dixon a ‘Gentleman’,Mr Kirby the House agent, Mr McMillan The Grange, Mr Morton the Policeman, Mr Muir Papermaker, Mr Robson the ‘Gentleman’, Mr Rust the Drapery shops owner, Mr Soderberg the Butcher, Mr Watson farmer at South EastFarm, Mr Woodgett farmer at Monkton Farm,
As the Monkton Village leek Show still goes on, I have a better version of this picture in my collection, in fact I created Xmas cards of the picture a couple of years ago with profits going back into the Leek Show, if you are interested.
