US compensation to George Floyd Family

I see the American courts have made an award of $28. Million to the poor family of BLM hero.

litigation is the norm in the States,lawyers would have been banging their door down to do this case, and as it was all caught on camera, so regardless of what we think of George Floyd the defendants were culpable and all they were concerned about in court was the size of the payout, I bet the lawyers/ambulance chasers asked for a lot more.

I read not long after he had died that his wife was complaining she had lost her bread winner, even though she hadnt seen him for 7 years. A Go-Fundme was set up and she became a millionaress very quickly.
The Media didnt tell us George was full of drugs when the Police were trying to arrest him and that could have triggered a heart attack.

Those of you familiar with the work of the American writer John Grisham will not be surprised with the process which lead to this award.
I recommend his novels which deal mainly with the vagaries of the US legal system.

In another case, Justine Damond was white, killed by a Minneapolis police officer in 2017 after she called 911. Her family were awarded $20 million, the previous city record award, which presumably was where this case started. it wasn't court awarded, it was an agreed settlement with the city authorities.
Minneapolis will have spent over $70 million on police misconduct claims or lawsuits in recent years, and that's with a smaller population than Bristol. That just might indicate some issues with that city's police department?

The difference between the White lady's case you quoted and Floyds is that George Floyd was a known criminal,had been in gaol for violence, was full of drugs and a dangerous powerful man resisting arrest. If I'd been a copper I certainly wouldnt have wanted him to get the upperhand whilst arresting him. The Policeman didnt kill him deliberately.He should not have resisted like he did. The Floyd family are now multi millionaires even though he hadnt seen his wife for 7 years so couldnt have been the breadwinner like she said.When you Live by the sword then you can also die by the sword. Why did his people make him into a Martyr because surely they wouldn't want their sons to be anything like him. I cant believe people sympathising

George Floyd - Already handcuffed!

Floyd was already in handcuffs when taken to the ground, so how would he get ‘the upper hand’ on FOUR armed cops?
Once in handcuffs, there is minimal risk from the suspect to the arresting officers – they had a number of options to complete the process, none of which should have ended with his death…
As a trained law enforcement officer, I did annual training to keep my ‘handcuff permit’ and arrest and restraint techniques up to date…none of them ever involved kneeling on a suspect’s neck!

I think that it is high time to let the due process of law go ahead under the US System in the State of Minnesota
The evidence will be set out, weighed and a jury will decide the outcome.
We dont know all the details.
But what we do know is that Floyd was a serial criminal duly convicted, several times, under the US System .
What we dont know is whether the Police Officer will be found to be so.

Norman no one is necessarily sympathising but that policeman used a method that was dangerous and the police were told not to use as it could cause serious injury and death, it did just that. He knew it was an illegal restraint method but he used it, we know George Floyd wasn't a paragon of society but this doesn't excuse those police who wrote complicit in his demise. This city doesn't have a good record with this type of incident as has been previously stated, you have to wonder what the ingrained problems within the city force are, as other cities in the states have experienced similar problems in the past.

I think the police have every right to use some force on a known villain with a history of non compliance and (Gun/weapon) violence. The facts are there. We in the UK are now facing the same problems and getting worse through lack of our courts and legal system IMHO. The $28m has become easy money for villains and their families with nothing to loose.

John they are allowed to use force to control but at the end of the day, the restraint system he used was not allowed hence the legal challenge. As I said it was all caught on film , so it meant the the police defense was effectively negated.
