Many years ago my sister and I used to get some fantastic ladies bargains at "Shanes" down the CHI
cant remember the name of the street but it was very busy

Shane's was on Frederick St, Laygate Carol.
Here is the street, but before your time.
The shop was to the right of the camera.

South Shields was quite a shopping destination at one time for folk from Jarrow and Hebburn.
Last time I was there two years ago it just looked desolate......

I was in South Shields in 2019 and was shocked by how run-down King Street was. Nothing but closed down shop fronts and dodgy-looking people hanging around and asking for spare change. Very sad considering what a busy shopping area South Shields used to be.

I think the only good thing about Shields is the seafront area and Colmans fish and chip shop

There's no great mystery concerning the decline of shops in South Shields, if people used them on a regular basis they would be profitable. If a shop is making money then it's more than likely to stay open.

One complaint about going to Shields to shop was there was no free parking.The Council are obsessed with making money from motorists.

You answered it in one Norman.... Parking is killing town centre shopping, people are sick of getting ripped off with parking tickets. You can't have your cake and eat it.

Newcastle do free parking after 6pm it does make a difference, South Shields should be doing something similar starting maybe an hour or two earlier, it could make a difference.

Thats why all of the out of town places like the Metro Center,Retail World,Silverlink etc attract people, free parking

mac but you cant walk down Amazon's streets and feel the goods. bet you could still walk down jarrows old shopping streets.

You are of course correct Mac C. Amazon and EBay + others has changed the face of shopping forever and, will never be the same again.
