Visited their base at RAF Coningsby on Tuesday. |
As the display season is over there was 11 aircraft in the hanger. Lancaster, 2 Chipmonks, Hurricane, Dakota, then Spitfires.
Most of the Spits and the Hurricane had engine covers off. One Spit had engine removed.
The tour was 1 1/2 hours long and the guide was talking the whole time and showing you photos.
If one of the aircraft is in for a major overhaul @ very 5 years it will be repainted in a different “ livery” to suit the Squadrons that few that “ Type”. Say RA F, the Polish, Canadian, NZ or OZ.
The size of the guns that were use from 0.303 up to 50 mm cannon. What a vast difference in length as they got bigger.
Very very interesting indeed
Cost for us oldies £8 each.
Outside and further down the airfield was the operational Typhoons being worked on, on the flight line.
There were over 10 but more in small hangers further down the line.
If you get the chance to visit off season make sure you have on good warm clothing as the hanger is unheated.
