Mr. Powell was very well respected on both sides of the political aisle. The Republican party wanted him to run against Bill Clinton in 1996 but he didn't want to. It's interesting to speculate on what the US political landscape might look like now if he had won. |
In later years, he regretted his decision to go into Iraq over the supposed Weapons of Mass Destruction, and became disillusioned with the Republican Party's rightward drift. He envisaged a much more moderate, inclusive party than the GOP was becoming, and ended up voting for Obama in 2008 and 2012, for Clinton (Hillary) in 2016 and Biden in 2020.
He had absolutely no time for Trump and his ilk, and several commentators have said that there is sadly no place in today's Republican Party for moderates like Colin Powell.
His death is a great loss to the world of politics; I agree with everyone else here that he would have made a good President.
