Hi Sheila, When Peter was writing the book he got in touch with me because I'd worked at a Pit and had some Local History knowledge and credited me in his book. The man who wrote 'Gresford' the Miner's anthem in 1934 was a Hebburn man called Robert Saint born 1905 at The Square, Hebburn Colliery. Robert followed his pitmen father and grandfather and worked down the pit as a 'putter'until it closed 1932. |
I took Peter to the NCB Museum at Washington 'F' Pit and when we got there it was closed so we went for a pint and bar meal at the Travelling Man in Boldon.A lovely man.
