Reading the replies to my bit on the searchlight battery, I remembered something else from way back then. |
The fields on either side of the road from the White Mare Pool Bridge to West Boldon, (a lovely long straight road), had concrete poles set into the fields in long rows about 100 yards apart.
I was told that these were to deter German air-towed-gliders from landing.
Then I began to think, if the Germans were coming, why didn't they just land at Usworth Airfield, an insignificant little airfield where nothing ever happened, then I came across this web-site.
It is all about the history of Usworth Airfield.
