Smiths Furniture Shop

Can anyone remember the shop in Jarrow. I recall it very well even though it must have been nearly 70 yrs ago. I was 6 yrs old.The salesman was always sat playing the piano and I'm sure they had a shop in South Shields always green decor.

I remember the Smiths Crisp Factory in Staple Road next to the Long Bar.
When they knocked it down in the 1960s they built part of the Community Centre on its land.

I remember Smiths Furnishings on Ormonde Street just past the Empire Cinema.
In the early 60s along with Woolworths they moved next to each other on the new Arndale Arcade.
Smiths was later taken over by Hardy on the Arcade.
Smiths at one time also had a furniture factory on Springwell Road across from the park and adjacent the Paper Mill.
Before WW2 the Smiths factory had been the Jarrow Dole School.

Just realised I am wrong Smiths furniture store was initially in Ellison Street next to the Ellison Arms Hotel.
When it moved to the Arndale Arcade.. Hardy took the shop over in Ellison Street.
And when Smiths closed in the Arndale Arcade... Hardy again took that shop over.

What was the name of the furniture shop in the shopping centre in Hebburn.

The Furniture shop in Hebburn Town Centre was 'Callers' Sheila. Their main shop was on Northumberland St, which was badly burned when it caught fire blamed on faulty Xmas lights.

There was two originally, Callers and the corner unit opposite Lobbans newsagents, was it Hardy's,

That’s the name ‘Callers’. we bought a round table and four chairs with a long low sideboard. It came with us to Somerset and and Oxfordshire. When we updated, a colleague of my husband bought it for his mother.four chairs was never enough, but I loved it as it was teak veneer and very up to date in the 1960’s. Happy memories.

I can remember buying my furniture from Smiths in south sheilds it was at the bottom of the road which went upto the railway station,we were moving into our new bungalow at the time.
