Mondays header from the old Ballast Hill

These two Dredgers tied up kept the river from silting up so shipping could get as far as the Scotswood works in Newcastle. I wonder how far upriver larger vessels can get upriver these days because they dont seem to dredge nowadays

Norman I seem to remember school lads digging up army buttons on or near the ballast Hill. Anyone else remember this?

Ye had a realy good collection, was a factory there, probably 40 ees and there was thousands left probably after the war.

There was a Gun ontop of the Ballast Hill in WW2 so the Army were there.
I never found any buttons but heard about them many times.

Yes remember it well, it caught fire and the button and military items were all over the hut for ages.

There was a hut either on top or near the hill ( memory !) and we used to scrape away the ground around the base of hut to make hundreds of buttons tumble out
