it was called the Jews hut, at the back of Angus gear works. They still dredge the river with suction dredgers now. Norman had to make another post of this as it won't allow me to download images when replying?

This is a closer view of the old Newcastle Shipbuilding Platers sheds, soon to be converted into the Reay Gear Works factory, which in later years became George Angus Gears and later again RW Transmissions. Is the 'Jews' hut on the photo and which one? I can remember out the back of RWT was a big black painted building. Was that it? (photo below).

We called the big brick building with the three doors the Jews hut the buildings behind it had gone by my time. I can just remember a house where C. is marked on the photo as my dad knew a man who lived there.

I think you are correct Davy,l am pretty sure there was a hut at the base. Of the hill ,my memory tells me that there were 2 JEWISH men,might have been brothers or father and son they both wore brown coats,one wore glasses he always wore them on the end of his nose.lthe hut was built like small hanger.lnside was alladins cave.it was all war surplus,my brother and a lad called Harry DAGLISH and myself some times work for the Jew boys as we used to call them,sorting out and folding up sand bags and doing odd jobs, in side was just a tip,l always remember the hut just stank.
This was done in the early 50s we were paid a shilling some times 2 bob.
There were uniforms,boots,bags of buttons etc. Happy days.

Just to add my memory tells me that the building was called as we referred to it as the Jew boys HUT,

Norman the hut that contained the old buttons Etc is well out of shot to the right of that first photo, to my knowlage it was never called the Jews Hut. It was part of the old Searchlight battery billets/Huts/Stores.

I mustn't have been very observant cos I cant remember the huts at the Ballast Hill, and cant remember what it looked like inside or outside the old Theatre even though I went to the matinees.
Then again I was only 6 when it burned down.
Here is the Ballast Hill & surrounding area in 1946.
Mike Lynch mentioned Collins Lane had a community hut at the Ballast Hill.
