Ex North Eastern in woke problem

Unbelievably, today I read a guy has been charged with abusive behaviour for calling two young women “Pet”. In the 1980’s, my daughter’s friends still remember how they used to love visiting us, as I always called them Pet or Pet Lamb. They thought it was lovely. I have to admit, I have not used the words for many years, but it’s nice as women in their 40’s still remember. I also remember a friend and Neighbour, when his mother from Leicestershire visited always called me, me duck. Happy memories.

I will keep using Pet when I wish. Try finding me guilty of a term of endearment, "wokeists".
Oh and I am Chairman of a Parish. I refuse to use "Chair". That is something I sit on!!

Woke madness Mac. I agree Chair is just wrong. I loved reading a woman winning best fisherman and saying don’t anyone said I’m a fisherwoman.

Sheila, I always call my grandson Pet or Pet Lamb, and a little girl I see from time to time I call her Flower, they love and respond to these names, don't know where the so called abuse comes in.

Sitting outside a bar having a beer last week in Perth a young woman tapped me on the shoulder because she heard my accent. She was from Alnwick and we had a good chat and when she left I said " by bonny lass" and she burst out and said "thats my husbands rego on his car, wait till I tell him.

We have had certain groups that have taken issue with this for years not woke just bleeding awkward, I held a door open for a woman(I won't call her a lady)and was snapped at by her saying I don't need a man to hold open a door for me, fine I said and closed it before she got through the door, I don't think she was very happy, but my better half told her when she was giving me a dirty look, he did exactly what you wanted so get off your high horse. It's people trying it on, not woke but you have authorities compounding it and blowing it out of proportion.

I am sick and tired of this so called ‘Woke’ attitude, perhaps it should be renamed ‘Stupid’. I will continue to use the language I am used to, it is not meant to be offensive and if someone doesn’t like it tough. I obviously do not like or use racist language, that is a totally different kettle of fish and is offensive.

Called on the carpet a few times for expressions like : Hello LUV how are you today ? Used to say/but no longer within my acquaintances: well just nockerup ? I still use most NE friendly greetings but now am a little more selective to whom I direct them . Still seem to meet a few Old Bats though .

Shelia ; (nocheruper) sounds crude BUT way/way back in sinpliar times , many ship yard workers who lived close to the yards relied on the dock yard steam whistles to start or go to work .Some early risers relied on company paid nocherupers whe banged, were paid , on there doors to wake them up. Ocassional in E/Coast company I revert back to " okay then I will nock you up in the morning" meaning of course - call you.

GeordieboyNS I have read about the “knockerup” many years ago. The book had photos of a man with a long pole reaching upstairs windows, so I knew what you were talking about. I had to think for a couple of seconds why you said crude, before the penny dropped. I often think of the word gay used to be happy, but young people would probably not know this. “Woke” used to be after sleeping. I had to explain the new meaning to my husband.

I honestly did not know what woke meant.But Brian has brought to mind many years ago when Eric and I were on holiday down south,I offered to help an old woman at the checkout,she rudely told me not to touch her shopping,I just said Ok I think the words no thank you would have sufficed,

Lillian some people are horrible human beings regardless of race, culture religion etc. Some people like to use anything they can as a legal weapon, I worked for a disability charity for a number of years and we knew people who would try and use their disability as a weapon to cause problems and threatening behaviour. It happens in other fields too, we are all equal but some want to be more equal than others.

Your are a gentleman Brian, please don’t change for these idiots, but I can imagine you being wary. The first time I saw that behaviour was from a young woman at work. New to the job, I was behind her as she came to the door of the tea room. The gentleman stood back to let us through and she stopped and asked him if he would do that for a man, he yes perhaps he would. She said well don’t do it for me. I just felt so embarrassed as I had never seen behaviour like that before.

I think it is very courteous when someone holds a door open for you, I always say thank you it is, after all, good manners, I also say a thank you to car drivers who stop at zebra crossings.

My late mum always addressed everyone as pet, to be honest I think the world has gone crazy when you can’t use terms of endearment it’s not as if you are being nasty.

Anyway , my mother who was always correct , thought I was an angel .In my youth we lived & worked within walking distance of the ship-yards , we relied on instinct or the varius sounding ship-yard steam whistles at the start & end of the work day. The nockerupers job was to bang on the door of selected employees to wake them up with a bellowing " you awake " the response " UP "

Good to see Geordie Boy & Sheila (who both got accidentally banned yesterday) back.
This is what Walter Wears wrote about the Pit Knocker up'. Walter lived in Quality Row close to the 'Banks of the Tyne' Pub, but was the 'Ellison Arms' in those days.

When my father was on ‘backshift’, which meant he started at 2am, the ‘knocker up’ used to knock you up. You had to chalk a 2 or 2x2 or 2x2x2 on the cottages shutters and depending if you were a light or heavy sleeper he knocked according to what was on the shutter. One ‘2’ meant you were a light sleeper so only required a gentle knock, while 2x2x2 meant you were a deep sleeper so the ‘knocker up’ really knocked loudly numerous times. The ‘Knocker up’ was an ex-miner who had either lost an arm or a leg in the mine, so that was the job he was given.

That’s interesting Lilian, I though the man would need to be paid, especially being out early in all sorts of weather. Not the best job, but I’m sure appreciated .

I think the man who knocked for my father,was his own idea,the payment my father gave him was to help him out financially as in those days lots of folk did odd jobs,as there was no welfare like it is nowadays.

Sheila ; I forgot about the knocher-uppers Pole , but remember the din . My favorite Pole Carrier was the Street Light gas light man , his pole had a shrouded light and hook on the end of the pole , he patroled his route at dusk , pushed the pole through a space at the base of the lamp pushed a togle lever to turn the gas on , like magic the sidewalk playground was flooded with light . At dawn he reversed the process using the hook to pull the lever down and shut off the gas ., ( A simpler time ) When we had nought but a good imagination .

I remember my mother telling me about gas lamps. The didn’t really give much light and I think you had to buy new parts for them.

Your mother would have been telling you about the gas mantle that was used in the home,they were easily broken and had to be handled with care. Geordieboy is talking about the street lights,which needed to be lit professionally,.I also remember watching it happen when I was a kid.

Lilian , you are correct about the street gas lamps , they took them down during ww2 to use the metal in the war effort . Replicas were reinstalled after the war for a short period of time . Our flat had gas mantles like Sheila mentions as she said they were very fragile and a poor source of light. Ours was a pay as you go requiring coins to be inserted in a meter box in the hallway . The flat is still there though modinized.
