Give a pint of blood

I got an interesting e-mail today.

I attended a blood-donor session a week gone Tuesday in South Shields and they now send an e-mail thanking you.

But I got another e-mail yesterday asking if I would like to see what happened to my blood donation, so I thought “Why not” and ticked the box.

They sent a step-by-step procedure of where the blood goes and the tests and procedures that are carried out before the blood is distributed.
It can be split into three components, so that three separate patients can benefit from the one donation.

My blood was taken from South Shields to Manchester, where it was quarantined until tested clear, then taken to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

I was talking to one of the nurses during the procedure and she was telling me that donations were down, not only because of Covid but because so many people are now getting tattoos and piercings, which prevent you giving blood for 4 months.

So come on you young’uns, give a pint of blood. It only takes about an hour from start to finish, you could save three lives and they have a lovely selection of biscuits.

I’m 80years old and have just donated my 123rd pint.
So what's your excuse?

They used to stop at 65 at one time, I had to stop after getting a blood clot in my lung 20 years ago.

Llyn, you have me beat as to the amount of donations. I did 11 gallons and had to stop at 65. Here in America were I worked (Bell Labs) it was quite easy to donate as they came to the building to collect. We had an in house cafeteria and they made the best brownies which was served after the donation. One of the reasons to donate

. One funny story, they just started on me and had to stop because there was a leak in the collection tube. They said it was over for me for the day but I convinced them to try on the other arm which the collection worked fine. Of course, I was a walking around with a bandage on each arm. When asked about the two, I told everyone I was feeling so good that I gave 2 pints.

Worst of both worlds Michael, a 21 year old mind in an 80 year old body.
Never mind, still got a full head of hair and my own teeth.

They used to come into the yards on the Tyne to allow people to give blood, it when I was in the AMEC yard an electrician went back to work after and died, that ended that. I am also prevented from giving blood anymore for medical reasons. I had to go to a session to find out I was no longer able to, more advertising and information needed to promote this good cause, as you say it doesn’t hurt and an excuse for a nice lie down😊
