Saturday's Header of the long gone Store Hall in Lyon St

This is the beautiful Store Hall on Lyon St-Albert St corner, where functions were held upstairs for many many years.
When Jessie Ives who ran our popular dances moved from the old Powerhouse she continued her Saturday night dances upstairs here. Those shops at ground level were all Co-op shops.

That entrance in Albert was the dept for household and children's clothes I remember buying my carpet rugs and lino for our first flat from that dept and being british made lasted for years.the downstairs sold paint and wallpaper.I attended weddings in the store hall which was very popular in my young days smashing building thanks Norman the photograph brings happy memories.

Great photo. I'm wondering if any of the shops were still open at the time the photo was taken, as I think the building itself was demolished around 1984. Also wondering what the portacabin buildings were for in the distance?

Looks like the main store on the front was open, the porta cabins would have been the start of hebburn village across the road.

Hi Lilian, Its always lovely to hear your memories of old Hebburn.
Until I was 9 yrs old I lived in 14 Lyon St just 50 yds from the store and remember getting sent along to the Lyon St entrance for a quarter of streaky bacon and then giving our chq number 27128. Or wa it 2 ounces of bacon?

If that building had been anywhere else in the country it would have been converted into something that would be still there today. The Mills in Yorkshire for instance were converted into homes.

It's true what you say Norman. However when you look at the Baltic Art Centre built from 1937+,it would have been cheaper to demolish and rebuild it. May I add that the Baltic was not a mill. It was a holding place for milled flour so calling it the Baltic Flour Mill is incorrect. Going back to the co-op, I'm 99% sure a ww2 bomb fell around the junction?

In WW2 a German Bomb hit Lyon St and made a crater outside the Co-op Shops about 15ft deep. Luckily for the locals it failed to explode.

I remember going to look with other kids .when that happened the Air raid wardens kept us away because the bomb disposal men were there to make it safe,You have a photograph Norman showing the exact position outside the co-op stores. it made a deep dent on the road .which was there for a long time .

Stan,the name Baltic Flour Mill is correct It was opened in 1950 by Rank Hovis as a working flour mill

My father was born in 1896. On his marriage certificate his father was a commercial traveller for Rank Flour. The lived in Sunderland. I often wondered if it was the Rank Flour in Newcastle. I actually have a photo of him. He has a beard like Edward VII.

It would have been Rank in Newcastle.The Baltic mill burned down in the 1950s but the mill as we know it today was converted to the Baltic for contemporary arts in 2000. The building itself was begun in 1937 but because of ww2 building was delayed. If you go to the Baltic you can see a dvd I made as resident engineer for the conversion.

Stan,I have seen several videos/photos of the works which took place to convert it. Although I was not directly involved with that particular contract I was aware of the work scope, programme,costs etc as at the time I held a Senior Management position for the Main Contractor who carried out the work

Edmund Nuttall! Great job done by all but we used a £4.5m frame to keep it together during demolition! No one believes we actually lifted Jcb's onto the roof to pick at 152 concrete silos. Dangerous 90ft up but you will know it was a first!

Not an architect or anything but I think we used to have some pretty good buildings in the toon. If that was still up these days it would have been converted into crazy money flats.
