Any ideas?

Hi all.

We are visiting Newcastle for a week and just looking for ideas of places to go. Already want to go to the Woodhorn Museum, Hexham (if the trains are running ok), Whitley Bay (husbands has never been), Sunday Quayside market and the Laing. All ideas would be gratefully received, thank you.

Tynemouth train station market sat morning, then whiteley Bay.

I've never been to Woodhorn Museum in Ashington (NOT Hexham) Sandra but school trips go there so it must be worth seeing.
There are loads of places you could visit up her so here are a few ,
Beamish Museum is worth seeing if you have a car to get there as its a few miles north of Chester le Street.
Opposite Minchella's on Ocean Rd which I'm sure you will remember is a Museum worth seeing.
Then there is the Discovery Museum in Newcastle a 5 min walk from the Central Station.
St Pauls Church in Jarrow is worth a visit as is the Roman Fort in South Shields.

If you go to St. Paul's in Jarrow a visit to Jarrow Hall, which is just next door, should also be considered.

Enjoy your weeks vacation Sandra , no matter where you visit you will love the places and people . ( Side-Bar for Norman ) Why on earth did they locate Beamish in acow pasture inthe. Middle of No-Where ? Surely ther were more relistic locations in : Shields/Jarrow/Hebburn along the waste land of derelict ship yards to create a semblance of the past with easy access by public transportation . Plus revitalizing the chosen area ? ? Love the idea but not the location.

The location is perfect geordieboy and based on Beamish Hall and the land around it.

The Keep, Black Gate, Northumberland St. and Eldon Square complex.

If you have a car Vindolander, Howsteads etc.

If seaside Tynemouth Castle etc.

Just look on Google street view for locations and info.

And for when you are in the city try the Crown Posada on the side.
Snug Victorian real ale pub with original stained glass windows, dark wood panelling and wall lamps.

And to eat I like nearby Sabas in King St. My last visit there was excellent. Great Sardinian inspired food

Fish & Chips ? Try Colemans on Ocean Road ., If you feel like a breath - taken 1 mile walk try the South Shields Pier. Both within walking distance of the South Shields Market ( best day Saturday )

Hi Sandra,
While stopping at my brothers In Jarrow a couple of weeks ago l planned a day out using my bus pass.
l began at Jarrow st Paul's monastery lots to see drinks sarnies then went to Jarrow bus station jumped on a North Shields bus which went under the Tyne there in 20 minutes had a walk around down at the fish Quay where l believe it was about sixty years ago since l was last there.l then jumped on the ferry over to South Shields l had never been on a Tyne ferry since the 1950s when as lads used to go over to Walker baths in our school holidays.There was no market on,next door was the new library l sought of got lost in there,the l travelled along King st l think it was King st it has certainly been run down since the 1960s,l then went into the old library which is now a museum mainly of shipbuilding shiprepair showing some great photos of Hebburn and Jarrow shipbuilders of yester year it was really worth seeing for me as l served my time in HEbburn Palmers in the 1950s
The museum has just opened they have done a fantastic job the caffiteria do drinks and lunches.
From there cought the Metro to my sisters who lives in Hebburn had a coffee then went back to my brothers in Jarrow,then relaxed after a very busy day l used my bus pass on all transport except the ferry which l got a concessionry ticket costing 92 pence.great day had by all

If you like history, try the Newcastle keep built 1172 for Henry ll and next door Black Gate 1247. Further along is St. Nicholas Cathedral.well worth a visit.If you enjoy Chinese food, there's Stowell St with its own Chinatown.

Tom ; After your visit to the museum ( King & Ocean Rd ) half way down Ocean Rd is Colemans fish & chip store , best in town. Sounds like you had an excellent walk-about. That shopping area never been the same since the big box stores opened up , plus no transportation on thoes two main streets except shanks pony .

There is now an upmarket branch of Colmans in Gandhi's Temple at the Southern end of the "front".
It is very good with good views of the coast.
Always worth a trip.

With all this advice Sandra...best book a month!

The last time I was over my siblings took me for fish and chips along the promenade just past the old Marsden Ratler caboose , they said it was a previous band - stand ., It was the most lavish fish and chip restaurant , almost black tie , reservation required , do you know the place anyone ?

That old Bandstand is Colmans geordieboy.

For years and year we go for fish n chips to North Shields Fish Quay ( The Waterfront). Excellent.

Norman you are right the fish-Quay also serves an excellent meal in a more rustic setting . Love the ferry ride across the river . A question for you (Read 5 down side-bar) about Beam Ish . Probably a good reason for the location , BUT .,

Thank you to everyone for your great help. I am beginning to think that one week is not going to be enough. On our last visit we went to the Castle and Cathedral, both very interesting. We will have to have a trip back here later in the year. Also want to call at Seaham on the way home and see Tommy again. Take care everyone and enjoy the lovely weather.

MacCummings : I'm way out of touch but interested , why do/did they call the old bandstand ( Gandhi's Temple ) ? Norman : Thank you for the info on Beamish . Read lots of C.Cooksons books , shame to delete her name . Does Colmans have more than one location ?
