Big surprise on 1921 Census
Posted by Allan Campbell on November 16, 2022, 12:45:14
Paid £3.50 for a document from 1921 Census.
I had to, as I had found that my Grandfather Campbell with Grandmother and my father aged 7 were in Allendale at the time of the Census.
Granddad was laid off but home still at 21 Aln Street.
They were in the household of a Miss Hutchison and her sister in Leadgate, Allendale, Hexham.
Not sure if Leadgate is the place or the name of a road as cannot get to the Enumertors notes.
So Granddad had enough money saved to have a holiday with his family. I understand that he was a great one for holidays.
He would be 35 at that date and married 10 years. He would at that time not been a Royal in Leslie’s that came later in the mid 30’s.
I will check to try to find out what was happening at Leslie’s in June of 1921. Maybe not enough work to go round all the plate markers. Could it be that he just wanted a holiday.
Did, in those days, the workers have paid holidays ? I doubt it.
In that case I thought that G/F was away on one of his Hospital trips visiting people. He was often at hospitals through out his life visiting if not in them himself. A bit of a cause with him as he had TB when he was younger.
He was heavily involved with Hebburn Ellison Hall in later life. Regretfully there is not documental proof of that. A bit of the higher ups taking the credit.
I have the story and must put it up on the board and may get info. but its a bit late after all these years.

Well Alan, you know your dad as a 7 year old was enjoying a nice holiday.. My father was the youngest of 4 boys from his fathers second marriage as he was a widower. At the time of his birth in 1896 his father was a commercial traveller for Rank Flour. It could be interesting, but I don’t have the energy.
