Rishi Sunak is registered with a private GP practice that all patients with urgent concerns about their health will be seen “on the day”.

The west London clinic used by the prime minister charges £250 for a half-hour consultation and, unlike most NHS GPs across the country, offers appointments in the evenings and at weekends, as well as consultations by email or phone that cost up to £150.

Patients can request home visits from doctors for which they are charged between £400 and £500, depending on the time of day or night. The clinic, which the Guardian has chosen not to name, also charges up to £80 for prescriptions. I now ask what what happens if you require an operation?

Where else but the Grauniad except perhaps the Independent. Are we to believe that none of the owners or employees of that newspaper do not have private arrangements. Rhubarb!!
We are all free to make private arrangements. I do because the service from the NHS except for critical care is awful.
As a by-product I also advance an NHS person up the list.
The NHS cannot exist in its current form. It is not fit for purpose being overloaded at the non-medical level which costs billions.
GP's are taking the proverbial!
It needs taken apart and if that means some sort of system like in Sweden where regional councils finance health expenditures through tax funding and municipalities take care of individuals who are disabled or elderly

The NHS is a big black hole that no matter how much money is poured into it, we will never fill its needs.

I am sure all of us who can afford to go private would do so if it meant getting a swifter appointment and eventual medical procedure, like Mac says I& we do this it frees up a space for someone else who can’t afford to go privately.

What I really object to is some procedures doled out lie confetti, breast enlargements, gender changes, most cosmetic surgery, to name but a few, if a person wants this kind of surgery that is fine but not at the tax payers expense.

The other issue is foreigners rocking up on our shore and receiving medical care, women who are pregnant and want to travel to the UK should only be allowed into the country if they can provide proof that they have Medical Insurance, no Medical Insurance then no entry.

Dentistry - I haven’t been able to access an NHS dentist in I don’t know how many years but hey if I landed in the UK in a dinghy then immediately I am eligible to receive dental care, all wrong.

Liz, you are right, but we all put up with it and never complain. I read the doctors working part time is all to do with their pension. What Government decided if they work more than certain hours it will be taken from their pension. I read a lady came out of Peterborough train station, having passed homeless people in sleeping bags, trying to keep warm and across the street in a railway hotel, 80 immigrants are staying. A warm room and three meals a day. Phones etc ,from the UK tax payer. While Our own people are neglected. Where did we all go wrong.

I think we've went wrong because the best people to become MP's & Councillors arent interested in doing it, and that allows the wrong people to jump in and take those jobs.

Many practices UK wide have partners just working 3 days a week.
In my area I see some of those 3 day workers operating in private practice.
This needs stamped on now!!

You are right Norman, you never see an MP come out of parliament poorer, the decent ones are in the minority, we could say the same for a lot of councillors, we had a great Councillor but he died very suddenly about 18 months, his replacement is as useful as a rubber crutch.

A bit of a tangent from the original thread but to follow up on your answer Sheila, I have just read that the migrant centre in Manston is now empty the occupants are now languishing, at tax payers expense, in 3 and 4 star hotels, no cost of living crisis for them!!!

Mac Cummings; I agree with you the current NHS is obsolete except for major procedures. It has been stretched beyond its initial intent of basic medical assistance to try and cover all and sundry expectations . It should be retained in it's current form until a completely new model is designed then scrapped . Probably , there should be none or a very basic coverage for illegals until they can contribute fully to the new plan . There will and always has been room for people who can afford a cadillac medical service , nothing wrong with that , as long as it does not effect the staffing of the new model .

Sweden is not without it's medical staffing problems , many of the brightest young doctors don't want to work more than a three day week , unlike Cuba where they seem to have an abundance of street block doctors .

I find it wrong that if you see a specialist and he tells you that you need an operation and the waiting list is many months but if you are prepared to pay, he will do the operation for you the next day and often in the same hospital. If they are truly private, they should concentrate on that, give up there NHS salary and stop using it as a feeding ground for there second income.

John, I had a both my knee joints replaced 3 years ago, after my physical examination the surgeon offered the operations in the Nuffield as I had no underlying health problems and I would be in and out in 36 hours, the Freeman hospital was going to be 5 days, evidently it was cheaper to the NHS for my operation done this way than at the Freeman. I didn't argue, the first op, booked in a 3pm, in the theatre at 4pm, having my evening meal just after 6 pm, no mucking about.

Glad all went well Brian. Last year my friend need a breast cancer operation. He husband scared of any waiting said you will go private. She said wait and see what happens, she saw her surgeon and the NHS organised the op to be done at the Manor Private Hospital. He explained to her he thought it all went well. And on Christmas Eve he rang her to say the results were as he thought which was very good. He said he thought he would let her know and she could enjoy Christmas without worrying. 12 months on, all is fine. Thank you NHS, and NHS surgeon.

Sheila NHS and private care can work well together, I think the time of year helped as the hospitals don't get a lot of people wanting ops around Christmas and New Year, a few years back I was due to go in for a procedure in late January I got a phone call on the 27th December offering me the op on New Year's eve due to cancellations, We had made arrangements for that day so I declined. I am pleased that your friend's surgery went so well a tremendous Christmas present for the whole family.

To be honest I have found that it is a postcode lottery for NHS treatment, the North East comes quite high up the list for treatment received and how fast you receive it.

Some friends of ours just moved from Washington, once the move was complete they registered with a GP, immediately on registration they were called to the surgery to be assessed, within a few days various treatments, an ECG and other procedures were booked, that is what I call a very good service.

We live in Herefordshire, so far my husband has received excellent treatment, apart from my visit to A & E earlier this year, touchhwood I haven’t needed medical attention, but some of our neighbours seem to have been treated for ailments fairly quickly.
